LESSON SEVENTEEN - PRODUCE YOUR OWN REVIEW
The following is a pretty simple formula to help you structure your own review
- Open with an introduction that does the following things:
- catches the reader/viewers attention;
- identifies the thing you'll be reviewing (e.g., the name of the game);
- identifies the developer, publisher and platform.
- Go in depth about each element you want to explore, making sure each section does these things:
- opens with a topic sentence that says what the section is about;
- has several detail sentences that prove the point you are trying to make;
- uses examples from the game wherever possible, to help prove your point.
- End with a conclusion that does the following:
- *briefly* restates the main ideas of the review;
- makes a judgment about the game, saying whether certain elements are good or bad
- recommends that the reader/viewer plays the game
- PLATFORMS
What different consoles/systems is the game available on and which version did you play?
- GENRE
What genre is the gameplay but also what genre is the story and setting?
- NARRATIVE
Give a brief synopsis of the storyline
- CHARACTERS
Who do you play as and who are some of the most interesting other characters in the game?
- GAMEPLAY
What do you do in the game? What is the level of challenge and difficulty?
- TARGET AUDIENCE
Who is the game aimed at and why?
- RECOMMENDATION
What are your personal feelings about the game? What worked for you and why? What didn't?
- RATINGS FOR AT LEAST THREE DIFFERENT ASPECTS
Give the game a rating, either numerical or stars or thumbs up or down etc for things like; visuals; sound; replayability; originality; or any other criteria that you choose.
When your teacher has checked your script, you can record your review, either just as audio or with you speaking to camera. Download appropriate footage of the gameplay from youtube and start to edit together your video review using either your audio narration or cutting with your own presenter video.
